Jenny Holten went on Shark Tank Australia in 2017 to pitch her gluten-free bakery, Strange Grains. She was 69 at the time and asked for $350,000 in return for 10% of her business, valuing it at $3.5 million.
Holten started baking gluten-free bread at home in 2011 after being diagnosed with coeliac disease. By 2016, she had opened a shop in Leederville and reached $1 million in yearly sales. Her bread, priced between $13 and $15, stood out for its quality.
The Sharks were unsure about her valuation at first. But her strong profits and the growing gluten-free market caught their attention. Naomi Simson offered the full $350,000, asking for a 25% stake. Holten negotiated and accepted the deal.
After the show, Strange Grains moved into a bigger space and continued to grow. By 2024, the business was estimated to be worth around $6 million. Some people, however, have questioned whether that value can hold, given the niche nature of the market.

The AUUG Motion Synth turns movement into music, using a motion-sensitive grip and an app to let users control sound through physical gestures. It essentially transforms a smartphone into a live performance tool.
Inventor Joshua Young pitched it on Shark Tank Australia as a breakthrough for musicians and performers looking to explore new creative frontiers.
The Sharks appreciated the concept but questioned its commercial potential and niche appeal. Though it didn’t get a deal, AUUG caught the eye of experimental artists and remains a unique innovation in music tech.|
Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, has advice every entrepreneur needs to hear: before you go big, make sure your idea actually works.
The key, he says, is to start small. Test your idea with real people, but do it in the simplest, cheapest way possible. No bells and whistles—just enough to see if it solves a problem or sparks interest. Gather feedback, look at the data, and ask yourself: is this something people truly need or want?
And here’s the hard part. If the answer is no, don’t cling to it. Pack it up, learn from it, and move on to the next idea. It’s not failure—it’s part of the process.
Being an entrepreneur means facing tough truths and making smart decisions early. Testing your idea isn’t just about saving time and money—it’s about setting yourself up to build something real, something that matters.
