From the late 19th century to the early 20th, several European countries - including France, Belgium, Germany, the UK, and Spain - displayed people from colonized regions in exhibitions and world fairs.
These so-called "ethnological expositions" showcased Indigenous people, Africans, and Asians in artificial "native villages," presented as living curiosities to the public.
Millions of Europeans visited these displays, which were often justified as "scientific" or "educational" but were, in truth, deeply dehumanizing.
They reflected the racist and colonial ideologies of the time - treating human beings as spectacles rather than equals.
